Recently, I've been doing a lot of research on the Roman Empire. There's something about this time in history that seems to appeal to people of all ages. The architecture, the people, the culture, there's so many things that came together during this time period that I find fascinating.
If I had a time machine, Rome is the first place I'd go and I'd set the time dial to the period of Emperor Hadrian's rule.
Emperor Hadrian had the fortune of ruling Rome during one of it's most peaceful time periods. The empire had expanded across most of Europe, including England, where he built an enormous wall to protect his countries northern border.
He had a deep appreciation for the arts and architecture which I would have enjoyed seeing at it's peak. He made his home in Villa Adriana, an impressive complex that he used as his retreat from the city of Rome. There he could relax in a peaceful environment with baths, gardens, and pools. It looks like it could compete with the best retreats built by the rich and famous today.
Emperor Hadrian had a love for Greek architecture and blended it beautifully with the Roman art. You can see this in many of the structures he built, including Hadrian's Arch and the Library of Hadrian in Athens.
What I love and appreciate most about Emperor Hadrian, is his enjoyment of travel and his desire to leave a lasting impression on the place that he loved. He kept an open mind, and learned from different cultures. He took styles and ideas from the different regions he visited, and he blended them into some of the most beautiful places that can still be visited today.
